REVIEW OF JUP BANEE VIDEO PART 9 BY DR KSD
Video at: www.sikhivicharforum YOU TUBE Channel
THE CONNECTIONS – the Preamble to Jup , First Salok, Paurees, Last Salok are all connected.
- The Preamble – is about the Creator (Gur Parsad is the enlightenment)
- Jup – realize that the Creator is Within
- First Salok – the Creator is Within
- First Pauree – seeking to Realize the Creator WITHOUT won’t work
- 38 Paurees – the Path
- Last Salok – the Outcome
PRE 1469 SPIRITUALLY CONCEPTUALIZED
- All practices assume that God is EXTERNAL / OUTSIDE/ UP THERE – WITHOUT.
- Karam Kand/Rituals form the basis – Purity/Cleansing
- Penance is the higher level – Jup/Tup
- Ideology in the texts is the apex – Vedas/Puranas/Upanishdas/Shashtras
1469 – PAUREE 1 – GURU NANAK’S PHILOSOPHY IS IN TOTAL CONTRAST
- God is WITHIN so rituals and penance as per the texts (Without) is rejected
- The starting process of the realization Within is in Pauree 1
- Guru Nanak’s Conception of Spirituality in SGGS ji begins in Jup Banee and all the 1429 pages will elucidate how to achieve the realization Within
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Kiv Sachiara Hoeyey Kiv Kooray Tootey Paal
- Available translations state: So how can you become truthful? And how can the veil of illusion be torn away?
- Critique : What was the Problem ? That people were not truthful? That if we replace the old practices (chanting etc) and texts (Vedas etc) by chanting Gurbani and having Akhand Path (continuous) readings etc one will become “truthful?”
- The real issue is not that the ritual is conducted untruthfully but of the ritual itself. A ritual is meaningless and only done as a rite, merely a futile practice and not of use in attaining the realization Within.
- What was the REAL Problem then? It was that people were searching for God WITHOUT – They were NOT getting anywhere with the prevalent practices.
- The problem in Guru Nanak’s Language is Kiv Sachiara Hoeyey Kiv Kooray Tootey Paal
And the solution to this problem in Guru Nanak’s language is
Realize God Within – become ਸਚਿਆਰਾ Sachiara instead of the practices
rejected in the preceding pangtis (Sochey Soch to Sehas Sianpa)
CRITIQUE OF PREVALENT TRANSLATION
- Mistakes in translations
- Sachiara is mistranslated as “becoming truthful.” Truthfulness was
never the issue.
- The context of the Preamble, Title, First Salok and First Pauree were IGNORED when translating “sachiara”
- Koor is mistranslated as “illusion” – this is out of context
Koor is Defined as ‘without Him, devoid of realization of God”
(SGGS 468 Salok M : 1)
Koor Raja Koor Parja Koor Sabh Sansaar.
Koor Meeya Koor Bibi Khup Hoey Khaar
Koor Koorey Neho Lagga Visreya Kartaar
And the culmination is
Nanak Vkhaney Benti TUDH BAJH KOORO KOOR.
DEFINITION AS PER GURBANI FRAMEWORK
Kiv Sachiara Hoeyey Kiv Kooray Tootey Paal
Kiv – How then
Sachiara – (from the word SACH for the Creator)

Paal – Literally : wall,obstacle
- Pre 1469 spirituality: all who looked Without were in fact spiritually “dead’ but Guru Nanak’s first message was that to be spiritually “alive” the first step is the Realization of Within – the first bakhsish (Grace, Blessing – Gur Parsad) is the first Salok. The vision is to bring us out of this maze that even now we are in – by looking Without
– (SGGS 102 Rag Maajh M: 5)
Sabh Kich Ghar Meh Bahar Nahee || Bahar Tolai So Bharam Bhulaee ||
Everything is within the home of the self; there is nothing beyond.
One who searches outside is deluded by doubt.
Spirituality is an intellectual choice, not a preordained path. Gurbani
provides us a list of choices.
– (SGGS 1245 Rag Saarang M: 1)
Akalee Saahib Saeveeai Akalee Paaeeai Maan ||
Akalee Parrih Kai Bujheeai Akalee Keechai Dhaan ||
By wisdom is the Lord served, by wisdom is attained honor
By wisdom are books interpreted; by wisdom is dispensed charity.
Our choices precede our actions
- (SGGS 1376 Bhagat Kabir)
Kabeer Munn Janey Sabh Baat, Janut Hee Augun Karey. Kahey Kee Kuslaat Hath Deep Kuey Praey.
The mind knows, and chooses to commit vices in such knowing. What else can one say if one knows there is a well ahead, but choses to fall into it.

Kiv Sachiara Hoeyey Kiv Kooray Tootey Paal
– How then can I become a God-realized Being Within; how can I
remove the obstacle of my non-realized state Within?
THE ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM
- The seminal response by Guru Nanak to this question is in the final verse of Pauree 1

Hukm Rajayee Chalnaa Nanak Likhiya Naal
- Available translations state: O Nanak, it is written that you shall obey the Hukam of His Command, and walk in the way of His Will.

Question : what about individuals with disabilities (like blindness, deaf or mute, mentally unsound etc) Answer : their Hukm is theirs and within them; because each of us has a different Hukm WITHIN. Hence we must be thankful that we have normal facilities to guide us to light the lamp Within. If we miss this opportunity to light the lamp with our intellect, then it is our choice and not of the Hukm within.
- Accounting Within
